Ideas and Inspiration for the Nonprofit Professional
Fall is officially here. The beaches have emptied out, the first leaves have started falling, and, if you live in the U.S., all things pumpkin have started to arrive—pumpkin lattes, pumpkin pancakes, and of course, pumpkin pies. For most of us, fall is also a time to leave the lazy days of summer behind and refocus on work. Attending a fall conference can be a great way to reenergize and gather new ideas. In that spirit, here is a list of essential fall conferences for the nonprofit professional.
If you are interested in how technology can help you to further your mission, check out bbcon 2017, hosted by Blackbaud. Held in Baltimore from October 17th to the 19th, this conference is billed as “the premier tech gathering for organizations and change agents driving social good.” Aimed at a wide audience, the conference offers various conference tracks geared specifically to participants’ roles. Individuals working to expand their organization’s revenue sources may find the Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Track and the Fundraising and Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) Track particularly interesting.
For those looking to combine professional development with travel further afield, the International Fundraising Conference (IFC), hosted by the Resource Alliance, takes places from October 17th to the 20th in the Netherlands. This is not your typical conference, as evidenced by their homepage, which asks, “What is it that’s standing between you and sheer, unadulterated brilliance?” Browsing the conference program, this question is explored through a lineup of intriguing big room sessions, workshops, and masterclasses covering a wide range of fundraising-related topics such as the future of U.S. foundations, international fundraising, and digital lead generation. Although the conference doesn’t coincide with tulip season, there are still ample opportunities to take long bike rides along ancient canals or sample a traditional stroopwafel, an ingenious cross between a waffle and a caramel candy.
The final recommendation for October is Our Common Future, which is hosted by Independent Sector and aimed at “doers and dreamers bent on making the world a better place.” Taking place from October 25th to 27th in Detroit, the conference features an impressive lineup of speakers from both the nonprofit and business sectors, and includes a number of inspiring sessions on topics ranging from democracy to racial healing to building prosperity in rural America. In addition, there are structured activities to experience the city of Detroit.
Kicking off the month of November, the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference is being held in San Diego from November 9th through the 11th. This conference aims to enable participants to engage potential donors by telling more compelling stories. As an added bonus, you can almost always count on good weather in San Diego, even in November.
Finally, for those of you planning ahead for next year, we recommend putting the Grant Professionals Association Annual Conference on your agenda. The conference is being held this year from November 8th through the 11th, but has already sold out and is currently only accepting requests to be added to the waiting list.
