As I update, I find myself excited about the many foundations that think outside the box, supporting innovative organizations working towards positive global change. These foundations are offering seed money, matching funds, staff, program, and operational support to organizations approaching educational, social, environmental, and medical challenges in new ways.
The funded organizations are nurturing future leaders as well as providing assistance for those in need; they are asking communities how they can solve their own problems instead of providing charity. While in college I studied rural development in Senegal, and the organizations I witnessed having the most success first and foremost listened to members of the communities they were trying to help. Then they thought together with the community towards creative solutions.
I am glad to see foundations supporting a similar paradigm shift that empowers people to help themselves in the United States and around the world.
